Name: Lea Ferris

What years did you attend classes at TBSSS?

I attended at TBSSS Broadway studio, 1992-1997.

What was unique about your TBSSS experience?

Tom Bass - an extraordinary teacher, sculptor and human.

What was your first impression walking in to TBSSS at Broadway?

Walking up the several flights of the old wooden staircase and seeing the warm dusty light was to enter another world - filled with the magic of the soul and creativity (and occasionally, Lloyd Rees).

What was your first impression of Tom?

Big eyes that could see everything. Non compromising in his demands.

What is your fondest memory of Tom and the Studio?

Watching him approach my life study figure , go straight to the area I had been struggling with for a week (the jaw/neck) put a tiny dollop of clay in exactly the right spot and say, see - how’s that?!?! it then worked perfectly.

How have your studies at the TBSSS prepared you for your practice?

The classical training and methodical practice has enabled me to make my own work. Plus…. nil irreparable!!!!

What is your favourite medium to work in?

Marble.

What inspires your practice today?

My love, appreciation and growing understanding of la natura.

Tell us about the two works you are exhibiting as part of the 50th exhibition:

Prima Venus (pictured above left) is my homage to beauty, to our potentail for goodness and, of course, to Botticelli.

The mollusc (La Stupenda, pictured above right) was sacred in Greek times as representing the body and the soul. I am in awe of the slimey formless creature (the soul) which sculpts its own mathematically perfect home!
