Peter Bartlett at work in his studio.

Name: Peter Bartlett

What years did you attend classes at TBSSS?

Started attending classes mid 1990's until present day. Began teaching at TBSSS in 2023.

What was unique about your TBSSS experience?

Being surrounded and inspired by Tom's sculptures.

What was your first impression walking in to TBSSS at Broadway and meeting Tom?

I remember walking up the staircase at Broadway and meeting Tom, dressed all in white with sculptures all around. It was a bit like meeting Merlin from King Arthur stories - a wise old magician.

What is your fondest memory of Tom and the Studio?

Working with Tom and a group of other sculptors on a public sculpture “The Rainbow Serpent” for Erskineville Public School.

How have your studies at the TBSSS prepared you for your practice?

It has given me confidence in my own work.

What is your favourite medium to work in?

Clay, plaster and wood.

What lessons / skills / concepts have stayed with you from your time at TBSSS?

Working with clay, wrapping it up, mould making, casting, patience, commitment and the meditative process. Getting it right!

What inspires your practice today?

Looking at other sculpture and sculptors and trying to sculpt something unique to me.

Tell us about the works you are exhibiting as part of the 50th exhibition:

Sack Man (above right): a working man, carrying a load.

Twirl (above left): a line drawn in space with wood inspired by wafting smoke.

Thank you Peter!
