Congratulations to long time TBSSS student Sam Eller who has his first solo exhibition now showing at Hurstville Museum and Gallery. The exhibition titled ‘Life Carved in Stone’ features 20 sculptures created by Sam.

Sam has honed his craft over 25 years, and this collection of works was produced as the artist developed his knowledge of the human figure and explored relationships and emotions through stone. The skills of carving stone are learnt over time and the development of Sam’s carving skills can be seen in the complexity and range of his designs.

“The quality and type of the stone determines the level of detail and finish of the sculpture,” said Sam.

“The best subjects come from observing fleeting moments in the people near me, or from cinema or TV. These can be caught by camera or most often by sketching afterwards.”

“I am indebted to the legacy of sculptor Tom Bass. His sculpture studio school carries on traditional teaching methods, including sculpture from life models in clay and plaster and developing abstractions from them,” added Sam.

Life Carved in Stone will run from 13 February to 7 March 2021.
