Take a Look: North Sydney Art Prize Exhibition

The State of Things, Monika Scarrabelotti

The North Sydney Art Prize is a major biennial arts event showcasing some of the best in contemporary art from across Australia.

This year’s exhibition features over 110 artworks to be displayed across the grounds of the historic Coal Loader site.

This transformed industrial site provides a unique backdrop for visitors to experience a broad range of artworks: from immersive, site-specific installations within the atmospheric underground chambers and tunnels, to sculptures dotted throughout the picturesque parklands through to paintings, works on paper and multimedia works displayed in the historic Cottage and workshops.

The 2022 curatorial theme encourages artists to consider the overarching principles of the Coal Loader Centre for Sustainability. In response to the curatorial theme, selected artworks explore sustainability and the environment with many addressing the impacts of climate change and consumerism, as well as responding to the inspiring natural and industrial elements of the site and surrounds.

Congratulations to TBSSS teacher Monika Scarrabelotti, who is one of the exhibitors this year. Monika is exhibiting her installation The State of Things. About the work:

The State of Things was my response to the harrowing black summer bush fires that ravaged our country in 2019/2020. In this sculptural installation I have used burnt wood and charcoal collected after the fires.

The cow jawbones that echo the side of the figure’s body are a nod to agricultural industries and our need for change to create a more sustainable future. They can also be interpreted as grief for the devastating loss of wildlife, livestock, destroyed ecosystems and homes. But still there is a balance in this piece of despair and hope, decay and rebirth, not unlike the fresh bursts of green regrowth amongst a fire ravaged landscape. It is not to late for change.

Exhibition: 14 - 29 May 2022, Open Daily 10am-4pm
Venue: Coal Loader Centre for Sustainability, 2 Balls Head Drive, Waverton
